In an effort to ensure that persons with disabilities and the communities in which we live are prepared for a disaster, especially a hurricane, Self Reliance makes disaster prevention, preparedness and planning a priority throughout the year. Self Reliance staff are active on local governmental committees to make certain the needs of people with disabilities are considered in the planning and development of community response to disasters. Training is available to people with disabilities to assist them in personal planning and response to disaster. Assistance is also available in submitting applications for special needs sheltering. In addition, the special needs shelters are working towards becoming more accessible and communications at the shelter for those who are deaf or hard of hearing are improving. An ongoing part of this project is training to shelter workers relative to assisting persons with disabilities in shelter settings.
